The small town movie theater may be making a come back. Many theaters in small towns shut down because of declining attendance and the cost of digital upgrades. That may be changing. Many rural small towns lack any form of social entertainment and even online streaming services are limited because of broadband access. In California, Maya Cinemas is opening theaters in rural, underserved areas like Delano. The company has opened cineplexes in Fresno, Pittsburgh (CA) and Bakersfield. The Gates Family Foundation is even offering grants to fund digital equipment for rural movie theaters.
